Job Description

Stratas Advisors is seeking a paid trainee analyst for its Biofuels and Alternative Fuels Services. The primary task of this position will be conducting research on Asian and global alternative transport fuels. This includes the gathering and analyzing of market data, new legislation, technologies, trends, and economics.

We offer our clients an array of subscription services and consulting engagements around transportation and energy. COVID-19 has had far-reaching implications for these sectors. The pandemic appears to have accelerated some aspects of the low-carbon energy transition; in this context, we are looking for research support.

The trainee analyst will gather information, critically review it and distill key takeaways and implications, provided to clients both through Stratas research products and bespoke consulting engagements.

Strong teamwork skills as well as the ability to work independently are critical to this role.

Responsibilities:

  • Monitor and collect data/information on biofuels and the broader transport sector, including overall market growth, fiscal policies, sales of alternative vehicles, trade dimensions and developments at a national and regional level.
  • With the help of Stratas Advisors’ database support team, streamline overall data gathering and handling for the Biofuels and Alternative Fuels services.
  • Support the Alternative Fuels team’s country-level forecasting and modeling of biofuels supply and demand, production capacity, feedstock splits, support mechanisms and tariffs.
  • Prepare written analysis of markets and policies in reports/memos/data provided for internal Stratas use and for clients, as well as in other forms, such as PowerPoint slides or Excel data.
  • Help coordinate data and information sharing between the Biofuels/Alternative Fuels team and other teams within Stratas Advisors (e.g. Automotive and Hydrogen teams).
  • Provide both analytical support and market insight into strategic consulting engagements on an ad hoc basis.
  • The trainee analyst will also provide research and analytical support to other Stratas teams on a partial basis as appropriate.

Requirements:

  • BA/BS (completed or in progress) is required, specifically in economics, sustainability, chemistry, transportation/energy or political science. An MA/MS (completed or in progress) in one of the above faculties is a plus.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong problem-solving/critical thinking skills.
  • High level of personal interest and enthusiasm in the transport and energy industries.
  • Understanding of the transport industry, including basic familiarity with foundational technologies, trends, and regulatory environment a plus.
  • Understanding of general economics, including but not limited to supply/demand and price relationships, and familiarity with international markets.
  • Mastery of an Asian language is a plus.
  • Experience working in a fast-paced environment with rapidly shifting priorities such as consulting is desirable.

Notes:

  • The preferred internship duration would be six (6) months, although shorter durations would also be considered.
  • Working days: 5 days.
  • Working hours: 40 hours per week.
