Company Profile

The Future Ready Food Safety Hub (FRESH) serves as Singapore’s lead scientific platform under the Singapore Food Story R&D Programme, to bring together researchers, regulators and industry to build up Singapore’s food safety science and R&D capabilities to secure Singapore’s food supply and economic value proposition.

FRESH will embark on R&D and talent development activities to help enhance Singapore’s local food regulatory capabilities and allow “first-in-market” food products to be safely launched in Singapore, as well as help promote Singapore-developed food standards internationally. FRESH is part of the Singapore Food Story R&D Programme (SFS), with partner organisations being the Singapore Food Agency (SFA), A*STAR and the Nanyang Technological University (NTU).

Specifically, the PO will be supporting work on the Identification of biomarkers from novel food and biological matrices (e.g. bacterial and mammalian cell cultures; human biological fluids) with an initial emphasis on volatile markers using SPME-GC-MS. Work will involve the development of sample preparation methodologies for complex matrices and the application of analytical techniques such as GC-QTOF-MS and spectroscopic analytical techniques.

The position is expected to work across multiple FRESH projects and contribute to the development of novel safety assays and exposure assessment methodologies. A key initial interest is in the assessment of microbial contaminants (and their byproducts) arising from both traditional food handling and novel food production processes.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide expertise and support FRESH research staff in the preparation and analysis of novel food and biological matrices
  • Help develop, implement and run in-house protocols for GC-MS analysis of biological samples
  • Help develop, implement and run in-house protocols for microbiological culture and testing (potential oversight/leadership of microbial culture facilities for the right candidate)
  • Plan and manage experiments, including ordering of relevant chemicals/microorganisms/ consumables and associated licenses, where applicable
  • Assist in the analysis and presentation of project data for presentations, reports and publications
  • Maintain data records and results ensuring data integrity.
  • Maintain general lab functions and cleanliness
  • Ensure appropriate safety and risk assessments are in place for lab activities
  • Assist in general FRESH administrative tasks, including help tracking and reporting on FRESH project deliverables
  • Actively integrate into the FRESH team and assist where possible/ time permits on other FRESH lab activities

Job Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in analytical sciences and/or food microbiology. Complement experience in the alternate field is a plus
  • At least 2 years of experience in an academic or industrial research setting.
  • Experience in sample preparation for chemical analysis
  • Experience in conducting instrumental analysis
  • Experience working in a preparative chemistry/food microbiology lab setting
  • Enthusiasm to learn new approaches and drive research projects
