Company Profile

A-Star-Education is an international education group, headquartered in Singapore and founded in 2016 by Brian Rogove in collaboration with Belgian investment company Verlinvest. The mission of our company is to prepare the next generation for a bright future and to achieve this, we strongly believe in the blending of academic knowledge and experiential learning (developing vital skills like communication and leadership) as this combination creates the ideal skillset to have an impact in a future career. Our company therefore focuses on 2 educational pillars: Private international schools and Enrichment education (e.g. speech & drama, summer camps, overseas middle & high school experiences, college preparation).

Today, A-Star-Education has 1,300 employees across its family of established brands, serving 25,000 students, with operations in Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam, China, the U.S., and the U.K.  A-Star-Education is on an exciting and rapid growth path with one of the exciting initiatives being the launch of Summer Discovery programs at Yale-NUS in the summer of 2019.

Summer Discovery is a pre-college enrichment program for high school and middle school students that combine academics with fun, activities, and sports. Courses are taught by university faculty. Students experience college life while gaining independence, self-confidence, and social skills. For 53 years, Summer Discovery has helped more than 100,000 students learn and grow.

We are excited to be partnering with Yale-NUS for the inaugural Summer Discovery programme in Asia.

Job Description

General Responsibilities

1.        RC’s will be assigned several duties each day and a daily written schedule will be handed out by the senior administrative staff. Due to the residential nature of the programs and supervision ratios required by our universities, the seasonable time constraints of the program and like all similar summer programs when you care of other people’s children, RC’s must be available for student supervision when needed by Summer Discovery. Being flexible is very important as daily schedules and your assignments may change during the day. Your off time is the perfect time to catch up on some email, take a nap, and visit recreation facilities on campus but it’s important that you have your cell phone with you in case you are needed to change/add an assignment during the day/evening.

2.        RC’s are responsible for SUPERVISING, MOTIVATING, COUNSELING, LIVING AMONGST, KNOWING and MENTORING all Summer Discovery students, and to perform his/her duties ENTHUSIASTICALLY and always with SAFETY first and foremost in mind. Supervision includes responding to and anticipating student’s needs.

3.        RC’s are responsible for reinforcing, supporting, as well as following the policies, values, and rules and regulations of Summer Discovery at all times.

4.        RC’s must follow all directives of the Summer Discovery administrative staff.

5.        RC’s must be unselfish and reflect a maturity that places the needs of the students and fellow staff members above their own.

6.        RC’s must set an example of a POSITIVE ROLE MODEL that the students will respect and emulate during the program. Enthusiasm is contagious.

1.        SUPERVISING, WATCHING, FACILITATING, PARTICIPATING, AND BEING AWARE. Safety first, always. Including, but not limited to the following:

• Head-counts at activities, especially when departing by bus to/from activities, no exceptions.

• At dining halls/restaurants, making sure students are eating, circulating around students.

• Watching, not sunbathing, at all pools, lakes, and beaches.

• Awareness of fire exits in residence halls, at activities, restaurants, and everywhere you are.

• Keeping an eye out for undesirable persons around our students (staff should always split up throughout group and always bring up the rear.)

• Resident Hall duty during the day/night and room checks at night.

• Keeping students away from dangerous and harmful situations.

• Organizing activities and being spontaneous.

• Listen sympathetically and compassionately to student problems, fears, and insecurities, any time day or night.

• Safety, safety, safety! Be an extra set of eyes and ears for the students and fellow staff.

2.        WAKE UP AND ROOM TIME – RC’s are required to be awake and prepared in the morning before the students and go to bed in the evening after the students. Typical wake up time for staff, 7:30–8:30am, unless otherwise assigned. Typical turning in time for RC’s, 12:30–1:00am.

3.        STAFF MEETINGS/GENERAL PARTICIPATION – RC’s must attend staff meetings, as well as be available for every activity and meal. There will be mandatory staff meetings every morning, typically between 8:30am and 9am, and often a second meeting in the late afternoon. RC’s must arrive to the morning staff meeting with a positive attitude, a smile and your staff badge.

4.        TOWN DUTY – Several staff will be assigned daily and nightly to the home area near campus. There will be a stationary staff person at our flashpoint in a designated location(s) and other staff will have walking/biking duty. Your mission is to be visible and active in town. Check in at the various restaurants, yogurt shops, stores and other popular student hangouts in your home area. You may not go to the movies, play video games, or stay inside any one place for an extended period. Follow a route that encompasses all the popular student locations and possible trouble spots and split into groups of two, if possible.

5.        TEXT MESSAGES AND CELL PHONES – For the safety of our students, it is required that you have your cell phone on at all times. If you receive a message, respond immediately, do not ignore. Carry a charger with you at all times.

6.        STAFF BADGES – Summer Discovery Staff Badges are to be worn at all times. They must be visible at all times to students and campus representatives.

7.        RULES AND REGULATION ENFORCEMENT – RC’s must strictly enforce all rules and regulations set forth by Summer Discovery. All violations or suspected violations must be reported to the program

8.        STAFF DAILY ASSIGNMENTS – RC’s will be assigned on a rotational basis to daily assignments by the Program Director, Assistant Director or Head RC. Actual assignments take into account skill, experience, availability of others, and staff preference, whenever possible. Staff assignments cannot be switched without the permission of the administrator who makes the assignments on campus. No assignment should be considered one’s personal possession and RC’s should expect to undertake any assignment asked of them. Accepting your assignments cheerfully and carrying them out enthusiastically will add immensely to your own enjoyment of the program. Some RC’s will be required to remain on campus, with students electing not to go on an activity, with students who are ill, assigned to office duty, or for any other reason deemed necessary by the senior administration.
