Job Description

Major Functions

The intern will support the Market Transformation team in Singapore. The market transformation team strives to set impactful industry aspirations on sustainability in Singapore and Southeast Asia especially in the areas of palm oil, plastics, responsible seafood, climate and illegal wildlife trade. The intern will assist specifically the work in responsible seafood and aquaculture.

Background

Our oceans are in a state of global crisis, brought about by overfishing and widespread use of unsustainable aquaculture practices - one of the biggest threats to ocean life. More than 90% of the world’s fish stocks are either overfished or fully exploited, and excessive chemical and antibiotic use in current aquaculture practice have led to poor and rapidly deteriorating conditions in surrounding marine ecosystems.

In Singapore, while seafood is one of the main sources of protein, domestic fish production covers only approximately 5% of total seafood consumption. Considering that 75% of the most consumed seafood species in Singapore are not responsibly caught or farmed, this places Singapore’s food security at risk as the fish stocks we depend on are vulnerable to collapse. To tackle this, the Market Transformation team is working on increasing both responsible production and consumption of seafood, as we believe that is key to preventing the predicted collapse of fish stocks within our lifetime and helping secure Singapore’s seafood supply.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Produce statistics, case studies and reports relevant to WWF Singapore’s market transformation activities in Responsible Seafood
  • Support the planning and logistics of Responsible Seafood events and capacity building workshops
  • Support the Responsible Seafood Business Platform through member administration and compilation of reporting data
  • Cross-functional support for events and communication activities
  • Conduct desktop research of corporates and organisations
  • Prepare presentations and material to collaborate with corporates and organisations
  • Performs other related duties as needed to ensure the efficient and effective functioning of the team

Required Qualifications and Skills:

  • Undergraduate students/ Bachelor’s degree in Business, Environmental Science or related field
  • Basic understanding of the aquaculture supply-chain and the sustainability issues within and basic knowledge of aquaculture aquaculture management
  • Advanced written and verbal English skills, along with the maturity to work in a global, multi-cultural environment
  • Experience in project management and collaborations with external partners
  • Flexibility and ability to work on other projects as needed
  • Interest in environmental and sustainability issues
  • Passionate about conservation and driving real impact
