Job Description

About the Role

3D printing of polymer materials is now very common, allowing for the fabrication of complex structures. However, moves beyond 3D printing of toys, tools, functional objects are more desirable. 4D printing, which produces functional objects with build-in electronic components in the printing process that can dynamically change their shape over time in response to external stimuli such as heat, light, electricity, magnets etc.

In this project, we will focus on the FFF/FDM /DIW printability of filaments or inks, testing their thermal, mechanical and shape memory performance. A key objective will be to explore the possibility of combining FDM printing of multiple materials, as well as DIW techniques into a single multi-material structure.

Key Responsibilities

We are looking for bright, creative minds to join this journey! This role focuses on the validation and characterization of our materials.

  • Conduct research on state-of-the-art developments in multi-material 4D printing structures with guidance.
  • Validate printing parameters (e.g., speed, temperature) for in-house developed materials using our existing multi-nozzle printers.
  • Perform prototyping, testing, and analysis of 4D-printed structures to evaluate performance.
  • Conduct basic material characterization and performance analysis, such as TGA, DSC, DMA, tensile testing, and shape memory evaluation.
  • Document results and findings in technical reports or research papers.
  • Assist in the design of printable structures (a bonus skill).

Requirements

  • Educational Background: Currently pursuing or recently completed a degree in Materials Science and Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Robotics, or related disciplines.
  • Technical Skills:
    • Proficiency in polymeric materials synthesis and characterization.
    • Or basic on the electrical and electronic engineering for the components integration, like Arduino board, etc
    • Familiarity with 3D printing technologies and materials; experience with 4D printing is a significant plus.
    • Bonus points: Knowledge of CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks), programming, and simulation tools (e.g., MATLAB, Python).

We Provide

  • An active and vibrant research environment.
  • Hands-on experience at the forefront of 4D printing and prototyping.
  • Work closely with a team of experts in materials, design, and manufacturing processes.
  • Opportunities to co-author research papers or conference presentations on project outcomes.
  • Development of highly valued skills in industries such as aerospace, space, and robotics.
