Established in 1986, Yishun Junior College (YJC) is entering a new phase in its history with the recent announcement of the merger between Yishun Junior College and Innova Junior College (IJC).  The merged college which will be located at the site of the current Yishun Junior college will function as Yishun Innova Junior College (YIJC) from 2019.

Job Description

Contract Period: From 1 January 2019 to 31 December 2019


The on-site full-time Library Officer reports directly to the HOD/ICT and Teacher Library Coordinator and shall fulfill the following duties:

Operational:

  • Manage the day-to-day operations of the school MRL and ensure that the day-to-day operations and administration of the school MRL is efficient and that the system, resources and equipment are well maintained.
  • Operate the Library Automated Service (LAS) in the area of circulation, cataloguing and online enquiry. Update and maintain accuracy of data in the LAS (e.g. patron information and status / location of library collection).
  • Prepare monthly administrative report on library usage, loan statistics, reference enquiries and library activities / programmes to the Library Coordinator.

Collection Maintenance (Print Resources):

  • Classify, catalogue and accession new library materials into the LAS.
  • Index, archive and update Project Work materials (i.e. Written Report) based on school needs.
  • Coordinate with the Tenderer/book contractor in the procurement, selection and delivery of MRL print, as instructed by HOD/ICT or Library Coordinator.
  • Work with Library Coordinator to weed school MRL resources once a year to ensure currency, relevance and optimum use of the shelf space.

Collection Maintenance (Non-Print Resources)

  • Classify, catalogue and accession new library materials into the LAS.
  • Coordinate with the Tenderer/book contractor in the procurement, selection and delivery of MRL non-print materials, as instructed by HOD/ICT or Library Coordinator.
  • Ensure the proper cataloguing of non-print resources and that these resources can be accessed by staff and students with ease.
  • Work with Library Coordinator to weed school MRL resources once a year to ensure currency, relevance and optimum use of the digital and shelf space.

Reference & Advisory:

  • Provide in-depth loan, advisory and information services to students and teachers:
  • Assist walk-in users as well as queries made through phone calls or emails
  • Help to locate sources of information from print and non-print resources

Programmes:

  • Provide administrative and instructional support to teachers in conducting activities, workshops, camps etc. for student librarians such as Librarians Investiture, Community Involvement Programmes.
  • Provide administrative support to teachers to conduct school-based Library Programmes/Activities at the College Level.
  • Integrate library programmes into the curriculum to promote library and information skills; instruction and reading, including but not limited to:
  • Conduct library orientation programmes (including tours) for new student librarians
  • Conduct basic user education programmes and information literacy for student librarians to teach them how to search for and evaluate information, as instructed by Library Coordinator or Library CCA Teacher-in-charge
  • Promote usage of the school MRL by assisting the Library Coordinator to organise reading activities such as conducting book sharing sessions, book review programmes, Library Week, quizzes
  • Publicise library collection, services and activities through library displays, newsletters, and school’s TV message or broadcast system, as instructed by the Library Coordinator.

Housekeeping:

  • Define collection and other functional areas with clear layout, directional and informative signage and guides.
  • Carry out shelf checking or shelf reading and generate collection statistical report from the LAS.
  • Work with the Operations Manager to ensure the cleanliness and orderliness of all areas in the library
  • Support HOD/ICT and Library Coordinator to ensure that library rules are enforced as specified in the college handbook.
  • Support and monitor the e-booking of discussion rooms and library venues by staff and students.

Other Duties:

  • Roster duty with the Library Support Officer should the library opening hours extend into the evenings.
  • Any other duties as assigned by the school with regard to MRL.

The Personnel shall minimally have the following qualifications, skills and experience:

  • Full GCE ‘O’ or 'A' Level Certificate or its equivalent
  • Good computer skills, experience with Office suite of products
  • Excellent management of day-to-day operations of the School Media Resource Library
