Company Profile

Hands-on • Creative • Circular economy • Min 3 months • In-person (Queenstown/Bukit Merah)

The Interchange is a circular economy studio focused on turning overlooked waste streams such as PP woven rice bags, PVC banners, and foil packaging into functional everyday items. We work closely with communities and seniors, and run hands-on workshops alongside our R&D and product development work.

We’re looking for an intern who enjoys making, experimenting, and working with unconventional materials, and who wants real exposure to upcycling, sewing, and community-based design.

Job Description

1. Upcycling, Sewing & Fabrication

  • Assist with sewing samples and prototype
  • Prepare and refine templates for upcycled products
  • Cut, test, and work with non-traditional materials (rice bags, banners, foil, etc.)
  • Support basic sewing machine setup and maintenance

No sewing experience required: we’ll teach you. That said, you must be willing to practice on your own time to build confidence and skill.

2. R&D & Material Testing

  • Test new waste materials and document outcomes
  • Assist in developing and improving upcycled product ideas
  • Help translate experiments into repeatable processes

3. Workshops & Community Support

  • Assist in public, corporate, and senior workshops
  • Help guide participants through simple sewing steps
  • Support workshop setup, teardown, and logistics

WHO WE’RE LOOKING FOR

  • Minimum Diploma (Poly) and above, preferably in Design, Fashion, Sustainability, or related fields
  • Genuinely interested in circular economy, upcycling, or sustainability
  • Good with your hands and enjoys DIY, making, or craft
  • Curious, experimental, and open to working with unconventional materials
  • A team player who can also work independently after guidance
  • Comfortable in a workshop and community setting

Bonus (not required):

  • Sewing experience
  • Design, fashion, or industrial design background
  • Relevant experience in sustainability or upcycling
  • Basic documentation or content skills

COMMITMENT

  • Mon–Fri, ~10am–7pm
  • Weekend workshops occur occasionally and will be communicated in advance
  • Minimum 3 months
  • In-person only
