Job Description

Specialist Internship - Visual Journalist / Motion Designer

About The Role
Are you passionate about creating compelling video stories using video, photos and motion design? As a visual journalist in The Straits Times Video team, you are a creative interdisciplinary storyteller who can conceptualise, write and produce visual content using videography and motion design. These video formats should engage our younger audiences across web, app and social platforms. From vertical news shorts to social short-form and long-form explainers, you will strategically craft video content for news, current affairs, and sociocultural stories.

You are deeply curious about the world we live in, have a nose for news, and are enthusiastic about clearly communicating concepts and facts through visuals in a highly engaging way. You are able to flourish in a highly collaborative environment and work with cross-functional teams and the wider newsroom. You must have a strong command of English.

You voraciously consume innovative multimedia content in many formats and on various platforms. Curiosity, resourcefulness and a willingness to learn are critical, as is a desire to stay up to date on the latest news, audience and content trends. A good sense of humour is an advantage. It’s a bonus if you thrive working under pressure to meet deadlines.

  • Conceptualise, script and produce videos using visuals and motion design for various platforms with clarity and attention to detail

  • Plan, set up and execute video production and post-production according to visual concept, from shooting to motion design and editing

  • Do voice-overs; ability to be an on-camera presenter is a plus

  • Work with supervisors and producers to craft video stories

  • Stay on top of latest news, audience and content trends

  • Translate information and statistics into easy-to-understand visuals

  • Experiment with concepts and formats

  • Collaborate with journalists in the wider newsroom and cross-functional teams to develop visual projects

  • Explore new animation techniques to diversify skills

  • *Suitable candidates can also do virtual studio production

Who We Are Looking For

  • Adept at Adobe Creative Suite, particularly Premiere Pro and After Effects; skills in Cinema 4D, and InDesign are a plus

  • Savvy in using social media platforms such as YouTube, Instagram and TikTok

  • Able to plan, set up and manage shoots

  • Able to shoot using professional and mobile phone cameras, and do video editing

  • Able to produce quality work in a fast-paced environment on tight deadlines

  • Thrive in collaborative team environments

  • Well-organised and a self-starter, adept at creative problem solving and time management

  • Able to clearly communicate visual ideas and concepts to collaborators

  • Have a growth mindset, with a willingness to learn and be nimble
