The Straits Times offers an exciting opportunity for students to gain hands-on experience in a fast-paced newsroom working on news and feature videos. As a video intern, you will contribute to long- and short-form videos for platforms like TikTok, Instagram and YouTube. This internship is designed to provide exposure to professional video journalism in a "real-world working environment." Depending on your role, you will gain skills in writing, research and video production (shooting and editing) while being guided by experienced video producers in a dynamic newsroom.
We are looking to hire interns in various roles such as research, producing, filming, video editing and motion graphics.
Research: Assist in research for stories and news; gather information, data and quotes from various sources.
Writing and producing: Assist in ideation and conceptualisation of videos. Contribute to the process, including conducting interviews and scripting.
Production: Film on cameras and phones. Assist with setting up and operating lights, audio and camera equipment. Shoots range from single- to multi-cam setups.
Video editing: Edit videos following the producer's brief, edit script and creative direction. Work with multiple elements, including footage, B-roll, music, graphics, visual and sound effects. Digest feedback, make changes and deliver video edits independently. Work primarily with Adobe Premiere Pro.
Motion graphics: Collaborate with the team to develop visual styles that align with project objectives. Conceptualise, design and create motion graphics that enhance storytelling in videos. Work across 2D, 3D and mixed-media motion styles. Work primarily with After Effects (or similar) to create animations, titles and effects.
Skill sets required to perform the role
● Skills: ○ Strong written and verbal communication skills in English. ○ Ability to write clearly, concisely and engagingly. ○ Good research and analytical skills. ○ Works independently and also collaborates well in a team. ○ Versatile and experiments with different storytelling formats. ○ Technical skills in filming, video editing and/or motion graphics are preferred.
● Competencies: ○ Curious, with strong critical thinking, a clear point of view and problem-solving abilities. ○ Excellent organisational and time management skills. ○ Ability to handle feedback and apply it constructively. ○ Strong interest in news and current affairs; aware of the latest trends. ○ Ability to host or present in front of camera is a plus.
● Qualifications: ○ Currently pursuing a degree or recently graduated in Journalism, Mass Communication, Media or a related field preferred. ○ Strong interest in video journalism and visual storytelling. ○ Able to work in a fast-paced newsroom and flexible hours (including evenings and weekends when required). ○ Able to commit to at least 3 months or more, in a 5-day work-from-office arrangement. ○ Prior content creation experience or a creative portfolio is a bonus.
