Are you interested in producing original and imaginative visual stories? Are you passionate about journalism and data? This ST specialist internship could be for you!

After successfully completing this internship, you will be proficient in crafting compelling visual narratives through a mix of skills in visual storytelling, user interface (UI) and user experience (UX) design, data visualisation, mapping, graphics design, animation, social media graphics, web development, including immersive experiences, and 3D illustrations.

You will have had the opportunity to collaborate on real-world projects, contributing to The Straits Times' digital presence and engaging our readers with interactive and informative content. You will have honed your abilities to transform complex data into clear and engaging visuals, enhancing ST's storytelling capabilities.

This internship experience will also enrich your portfolio and prepare you for dynamic and multifaceted careers in journalism, design, web development, and illustration, where you can play a vital role in shaping the future of visual storytelling.

Digital Graphics Journalist
To increase your chances of being selected, we are looking for someone who has an interest in:

• research, newsgathering and writing that complements visual elements within a story

• finding and analysing data to support or drive a story

• storyboarding and collaborating with other team members and newsroom colleagues

• improving your own visual language and a keen attention to detail

• sketching and making visual elements that go within a story

We will evaluate your application based on your portfolio (published and unpublished works) and your passion for news and visual storytelling. Strong preference for students in their final year of studies, or recent graduates, of journalism, graphic design, data science, statistics and computer science.

Data Visualisation Developer
To increase your chances of being selected, we are looking for someone who has an interest in:

• developing and designing data visualisations; 

• finding and analysing data to support or drive a story;

• storyboarding and collaborating with other team members and newsroom colleagues;

• learning and documenting our development processes and have experience with HTML, CSS and JavaScript. Svelte, React, d3.js and WebGL experience is an advantage;

• experimenting with new and emerging technologies like augmented reality, AI and beyond

We will evaluate your application based on your portfolio (published and unpublished works) and your passion for news and visual storytelling. Strong preference for students in their final year of studies, or recent graduates of, computer science, data science, and computer engineering. 

Digital Graphics Designer
To increase your chances of being selected, we are looking for someone who has an interest in:

• designing visually cohesive elements to bring a story together

• assisting the team to design and prototype data visualisations, visual stories or social media assets

• storyboarding and collaborating with other team members and newsroom colleagues;

• learning and documenting our design processes, and providing feedback on UI/UX issues

• becoming proficient with Figma, Adobe CC

• learning HTML, CSS and JavaScript in front-end development work

We will evaluate your application based on your portfolio (published and unpublished works) and your passion for news and visual storytelling. Strong preference for students in their final year of studies, or recent graduates, of graphic design, fine arts, illustration, animation and beyond.

Digital Illustrator, 3D Specialist or Mapping Specialist
To increase your chances of being selected, we are looking for someone who has an interest in:

• creating 2D/3D models and illustrations for various projects and being interested to learn Blender or other emerging 3D technologies

• applying textures, lighting and rendering techniques to produce high quality and innovative designs

• learning spatial analysis techniques to uncover and visualise geographical trends, patterns and insights

• storyboarding and collaborating with other team members and newsroom colleagues;

• learning and documenting our 3d design processes to continually improve our workflows

• using GIS software such as ArcGis or QGIS

We will evaluate your application based on your portfolio (published and unpublished works) and your passion for news and visual storytelling. Strong preference for students in their final year of studies, or recent graduates of, graphic design, illustrations, animation, fine arts, architecture, 3D programs, mapping, spatial analysis and beyond.

Web Game Designer or Developer
To increase your chances of being selected, we are looking for someone who has an interest in:

• creating web-based games that align with current news and events

• designing game mechanics, user interfaces and interactive storytelling elements that enhance reader engagement;

• develop web-based games that use HTML5, CSS, JavaScript and other existing or emerging technologies;

• storyboarding and collaborating with other team members and newsroom colleagues;

• learning and documenting our game design processes to continually improve our workflows

• implementing and testing game features, animations and user interactions

We will evaluate your application based on your portfolio (published and unpublished works) and your passion for news and visual storytelling. Strong preference for students in their final year of studies, or recent graduates of, game design, game development, web development, or a related field.
