Established in 2013, Public Culture supports small brands in their growth by creating editorial experiences to foster relationships, shape influence, and strengthen lasting connection with their communities. We believe in developing conversations of value and content with longevity — immersive stories that engage those who truly matter to brands.
Public Culture is a small team — as such, we look for highly motivated and organised individuals who work best alone but play well in a team. Our team has a background in the humanities and social sciences so we are big on two things: writing with elegant, technical finesse, and using data to inform our content development. We're also invested in building community and not producing content, so our content strategies often entail a community-centric component.
This is a hybrid role where you will develop content for social media and editorial platforms (e.g. online journal articles and long-form, ready features for press use, eDM content etc.). Our ideal candidate is a proficient writer who wants to learn how to write for different audiences and is comfortable conducting interviews. A background in English Literature and/or Communications is preferred. You must be able to begin immediately.
You will work closely with the entire team and be responsible for the following:
- Developing long-form content for clients and Public Culture
- Coordinating and conducting interviews and photo shoots
- Developing social media content
- Developing content for press
- Media monitoring
Here's what you will get out of this internship
We don't believe in narrowly defined job scopes, so expect to learn a little about everything there is to running a business: how to pitch for a job; how to develop a content strategy; how to market a brand; how to manage clients; how to measure campaign success; how to be a better writer and a sharper editor.
The aim is to get your portfolio polished and ready for a career in content production, media, and/or lifestyle writing. This is also a great immersion into small business life if you're thinking about starting your own business.
Required skills
First and foremost, you must be interested in writing! If you've always loved dissecting sentences and understanding how words fit together, that's one essential box ticked. Because we juggle multiple roles, we would love if you have working knowledge of Photoshop, Lightroom, or any video editing software. Major plus points if you can take photos and videos too, but if you can't, don't sweat it and please apply anyway!
Working arrangement
We work remotely from home and meet up once a week at Bartley for mandatory team sessions. Each meeting is capped at four hours, often including a team lunch together. You will be responsible for managing your own schedule and meeting weekly deadlines. Please note you may be required to be onsite for client meetings, interviews, and shoots.
We are a small but tight team — we work hard and fast and expect the same of those who join us. But we are also fiercely protective of our own and try our best to ensure you always feel supported in your journey with us. Here's a testimonial from one of our current team members, who started as an intern with us in 2017:
"My six-month internship with Public Culture taught me to be multi-faceted in terms of skills. As an English Lit graduate with a background in Mass Communication, I’d originally wanted to grow and develop my editorial writing skills specifically. However, as the internship was a hybrid role, I was also taught to hone other skills that I was interested in and would also complement the content work we were putting out. I think it’s very important to come into this internship with an open mind as you will dabble in a variety of jobs and skill sets, especially since the team is small. I remember telling Mel when I first started that design work was a hard no for me but I’ve slowly come to enjoy it and eventually took on an editorial-and-design role that I loved. I’ve also gained a lot of working experience as Public Culture works with small businesses from different industries. I was exposed to industry standards and practices when dealing with content creation or PR and advertising, and also learned things that were more specific to the different clients such as developing a brand tone or content strategies.
The fact that the team was a close-knit one made working extra enjoyable. There is always open and clear communication and team members always check in with each other to ensure that workload and stress levels are manageable. The working arrangement is also a bonus — we get to work remotely and manage our own time and deadlines (great if you’re looking to have better time management skills too!). Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed my internship with Public Culture and would recommend taking an internship with the company if you have an interest in learning how a brand grows purposefully and/or creating meaningful content!"
