Job Description

Job Summary: 

The Associate Counsellor will be responsible for providing professional counselling and consultation to students (full time/part-time), including psychoeducation, casework management, and referral to community partners or external professionals where needed. The incumbent will also provide critical incident management, develop and conduct groupwork sessions/talks/activities for students on transitional and mental health issues and healthy coping strategies. The role also requires collaboration with internal and external stakeholders to promote mental health awareness, and training to staff and students on mental well-being and crisis management.

Key Responsibilities:

Provision of professional counselling and consultation

  1. Provide professional counselling (individual and/or group) to students (full-time/part-time), which may also involve family or peers.
  2. Provide psychological crisis intervention, follow-up to students affected by critical incidents, and case management to at-risk student cases.
  3. Provide psychoeducation, casework management, referral to community partners or external professionals where needed.
  4. Develop and conduct groupwork sessions/talks/activities for students on transitional and mental health issues and healthy coping strategies.
  5. Provide proper documentation of cases, statistical data, and case reports to the Head.
  6. Provide regular updates to the Head of Department on the progress of students being seen for counselling.
  7. Assist in portfolios and project related tasks/duties.

Collaboration with internal and external stakeholders

  1. Work with the team on mental health campaigns/talks/workshops to create awareness of various health conditions.
  2. Work with the team to develop outreach publicity materials and contribute as a writer to student magazines and social media platforms.
  3. Work collaboratively with student service offices and other relevant stakeholders to provide a holistic approach to care to students.
  4. Conduct training/workshops for staff and students on mental well-being and crisis management.
  5. Assist with the collection of student feedback and tracking of help-seeking trends.

Provision of critical incident management

  1. Able to provide consultation and psychological critical incident management to distressed students, and where needed, getting immediate intervention for such students by working closely with various stakeholders in the community.

  2. Other duties assigned by the Head of Department.

Requirements:

  1. At least 3 years of relevant experience in counselling or mental health services.
  2. Registered with a recognized counselling association or relevant professional body.
  3. Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build rapport with students from diverse backgrounds.
  4. Ability to work independently as well as in a team.
  5. Good understanding of mental health issues and challenges faced by students in a tertiary institution.
  6. Knowledge of crisis intervention techniques and experience in case management.
  7. Ability to maintain confidentiality and manage sensitive situations with tact and discretion.

Qualifications

  1. Bachelor's degree in counselling, psychology, social work or a related field.
  2. SAC certified

Working Hours: Monday to Friday, 9am to 6pm
