To reach another person on the Internet you have to type an address into your computer - a name or a number. That address has to be unique so computers know where to find each other. ICANN helps coordinate these unique identifiers across the world. Without that coordination we wouldn't have one global Internet.
ICANN was formed in 1998. It is a not-for-profit public-benefit corporation with participants from all over the world dedicated to keeping the Internet secure, stable and interoperable. It helps promote competition and develop policy on the Internet’s unique identifiers. ICANN doesn’t control content on the Internet. It cannot stop spam and it doesn’t deal with access to the Internet. But through its coordination role of the Internet’s naming system, it does have an important impact on the expansion and evolution of the Internet.
This position supports APAC Hub and APAC Engagement staff in outreach, awareness-raising, and engagement activities among existing and potential participants in ICANN policy making.
It provides a good exposure to the intern on the work of ICANN as an organization, the Domain Name industry, as well as the topics such as Internet Governance. The intern may also be expected to be involved in both global and regional Internet Governance processes and discussions, and may be asked to engage ICANN’s external stakeholder communities.
Students enrolled in an accredited university and studying the following fields (or another related field that is not listed) are encouraged to apply: international public policy; international relations; communications and new media; technology policy; public diplomacy.
Key Responsibilities:
- Research stakeholders’ policy positions on Internet governance issues.
- Support ICANN Global Stakeholder Engagement Team members in the planning and organization of outreach events, such as the Asia Pacific Internet Governance Academy.
- Manage the database of ICANN APAC stakeholders, tracking feedback and growth statistics.
- Conduct research and horizon scan on matters related to Internet Governance and the Domain Name industry.
- Perform other ad hoc desktop research on diverse topics, and occasional editing, proofreading or drafting of materials.
- Assist in day-to-day operations of the APAC Hub to aid in the smooth operation of the Hub.
- Other duties as assigned or requested.
- An envisaged outcome of the internship will include a report and presentation on one of the topics from the (non-exhaustive) list below:
- Study on the Asian countries’ position on Internet Governance and Multistakeholder Model
- Development of Internet Governance in the Asia Pacific region, including platforms such as the Asia Pacific Internet Regional Governance Forum
