Company Profile

HyperLight is at forefront in commercialization of thin-film lithium niobate (TFLN) integrated photonics - a material and process technology that is enabling high-performance, scalable optical components across AI/datacom infrastructure, hyperscale computing, quantum computing, sensing, and beyond. Founded in 2018 and backed by leading venture capital, we’ve built a team and a platform focused on real-world mass deployment of TFLN photonics technology.

At the core of our work is the TFLN Chiplet* platform — a modular, integrated architecture designed for scalability, manufacturability, and seamless integration into complex systems. It offers a rare combination of extraordinary performance and industrial readiness, enabling system developers across applications to deploy the technology fast and ready. We partner with our customers and suppliers from conceptualization, design, and prototyping phases, all the way through mass production to ensure smooth and rapid deployment of TFLN photonic technology.

We believe our platform is the key, in the golden age of integrated photonics industry, to empower humanity to the next level. We assembled a world class team covering engineering, business and operations. We believe in the power of integrity, innovation, collaboration and pragmatic solutions. Our diverse team thrives on challenges and is united by a shared commitment to excellence. We take pride in tackling complex challenges with curiosity, humility, and a deep sense of care for one another.

Job Description

Are you interested in exploring cutting-edge semiconductor and photonic technologies? Are you eager to challenge yourself and grow in a fast-paced startup environment?

If so, we’d love to hear from you.

We are seeking a highly motivated Design Intern to support the design, simulation, and tape-out of integrated photonic devices and circuits. You will have the opportunity to work on state-of-the-art thin-film lithium niobate (TFLN) technologies, collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, and gain hands-on experience in production-oriented R&D projects.

This role is ideal for students who want to apply their knowledge of physics, optics, and photonics to real-world products, while gaining exposure to industrial-grade design workflows.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the design of integrated photonic components (e.g. waveguides, directional couplers, MZIs)
  • Perform photonic simulations using industry-standard tools (e.g. eigenmode solvers, FDTD, EME)
  • Support layout design and GDS preparation for tape-out
  • Analyse measurement data from fabricated devices and correlate with simulation results
  • Help document design methods, results and data analytics
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams (design, process, testing) for various engineering tasks

Who You Are:

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in applied physics, electrical engineering, material science and engineering, or related fields.
  • Fundamental understanding of optics, photonics, or electromagnetics.
  • Familiar with Python programming and Git version control.
  • Experience with photonic simulation tools (e.g., Lumerical, Tidy3D) is a plus
  • Experience with layout tools (e.g., KLayout, GDSFactory, Luceda IPKISS) is a plus
  • Strong data analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to learn quickly and collaborate effectively in a team environment
