Job Description

Data Scientist Intern (6 months)


Background

Global Foodservice is one of the focus areas for Fonterra. We have a large Emerging Asia footprint and built up market leading positions in the markets we play in. To help enable our double-digit growth strategy we are looking for a data scientist intern to support us in building a Competitive Intelligence & Market Dynamics hub.

The role will be tasked to support the Global Data Analytics Manager to build Business Intelligence expertise within our foodservice business and build a stronger understanding of consumers and customers.

Role Accountabilities:

  • You will work on every aspect of the data pipeline — from the building and maintaining information systems to research, analysis, and presentation. You will leverage data to impact the organization’s most significant decisions.
  • Focus on creatively collecting external, unstructured & semi-structured data
  • Work with diverse, large, and complex datasets to solve dynamic and challenging problems
  • Driving scalable, repeatable processes with existing tools (creating efficiency through collaboration)
  • Perform statistical analysis and modelling
  • Communicate and presenting findings
  • Develop impactful reports, presentations, and ongoing deliverables
  • Collaborate on new research opportunities across various functions

 Key Project: Development of Competitive Intelligence & Market Dynamics hub

You will help us to discover the information hidden in vast amounts of data in order to make smarter decisions to service our customers better.

  • As an Intern, you will use statistics and machine learning to power product and business decisions at scale
  • Data mining using state-of-the-art methods
  • Extending company’s data with third party sources of information when needed
  • Enhancing data collection procedures to include information that is relevant for building analytic systems
  • Processing, cleansing, and verifying the integrity of data used for analysis
  • Doing ad-hoc analysis and presenting results in a clear manner
  • Creating automated anomaly detection systems and constant tracking of its performance

Secondary Project:

Along with another intern, gain access to customers and/or consumers to work on a project which addresses one of our company’s needs. Present your recommendation to senior leadership.

 Key Skills & Attitude:

  • Currently pursuing Bachelor's or Masters in Mathematics/ Statistics/ Computer Science/ Econometrics or any other related discipline
  • Curious mindset with an interest in honing your business acumen
  • Self-motivated and works well in a fast-paced environment
  • Experience with technical tools for analysis — Python (with Pandas, etc.), R, SQL, etc.; Python skills and previous software engineering background a plus
  • Some experience with database systems, data wrangling and data visualization (Tableau)
  • Able to confidently apply, interpret & translate statistical analyses into compelling and actionable recommendations
  • Able to speak and write fluent English, Bonus – Mandarin
