Company Profile

Difference Engine is an independent comics publisher based in Singapore. We are inspired by stories from Asia and are committed to publishing diverse, well-written, and beautifully illustrated comics of all genres, both print and digital. We would love to work with writers and illustrators, both new and experienced, to contribute to the growing Southeast Asian comics community.

Job Description

As a design intern with Difference Engine, you will be part of a small and dynamic comics publishing team. Your main responsibilities will be to assist our marketing and design teams to conceptualise and create print and digital/interactive collateral to supplement our publicity efforts. You will also learn how professional editors and designers work with creators on comic and graphic novel projects, and observe first-hand how books are developed, designed, and published. When needed, you will be asked to assist with our events at bookstores, literary festivals and comic conventions. We value self-starters who are keen to contribute, open to learning (including new software and processes) and figuring out different ways to solve problems.

Required:

• Excellent working knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite specifically Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, and InDesign. Some experience with PremierePro and AfterEffects

• Experience and interest in graphic design with a keen eye for creating clear and engaging content for print and web

• Able to communicate ideas effectively using a variety of methodology such as colour, typography, imagery, and layout

• Savvy with social media and blogging platforms

• Creative, analytical, and able to juggle multiple projects simultaneously

• Able to work after regular office hours and on weekends for book events and launches when needed

Bonus:

• Video editing, animation skills, photography, and HTML

• Strong interest in reading and storytelling (books and comics; print and digital)

• Keen interest or experience in publishing

• Enjoys reading Sing Lit or Southeast Asian literature

What We Promise You:

• Room to grow and learn: We’re invested in helping you reach your personal and professional goals.

• A commitment to your overall well-being: We believe in work-life balance and are committed to ensuring our staff maintain good mental and physical health.

• A creative and fun working environment. We love experimenting and trying new things! We have regular book club meetings and gaming days.

• Diverse culture: We expand each other's work and life experiences through interactions and activities shared with a larger group of co-workers within the holdings group company, Potato Productions

• Flexible work arrangement: We’re able to collaborate remotely but we have a cool office space where we meet to facilitate discussions and in-person meetings. If you need a desk there, you’ll have it.
