Job Description

Wanted: Executive Assistant for Media Entrepreneur & Bookworm – A Sense of Purpose & Accomplishment, Lending Support…

Hi there,

My name’s Edward. I’m co-founder of Course Concierge, the online course publishing house.

For the right person, I hope this is something of a Dream Job.

If you are someone who…

- Is at a crossroads in your life, wondering what to do next;
- Feels you’ve a lot to give, but isn’t yet sure how to harness it;
- Is seeking an opportunity to prove yourself;

…this is a listing worth reading to the end, and considering.

You need to be someone who:

1. Loves reading. Primarily, the role is that of a research assistant.

As a company, what we’re doing is new: part production company, part advertising agency, part publisher. And so for the past two-and-a-half years since our founding we’ve been studying the history of these industries to make sense of it.

You ought to be someone who daydreams about spending your whole day reading. You need to be able to plough through a book, on topics as varied as PR and political philosophy, and relay it to me.

2. Is a great subeditor. In the company I play a role equivalent to editor, and to extend my reach I need your help.

You will be entrusted with “QA” (quality assurance) of products and marketing materials, and lend critique to numerous others on the team.

You don’t have to be classically trained, but I should expect next to no grammatical mistakes in your writing – and for you to become a trusted critique of mine.

3. Can hold me to account.

I’m looking for someone incisive enough to call me out when needed and help me work through my blind-spots; someone who in addition to aiding me can coach and challenge my thinking.

Duties will include:

- Finding, and helping furnish, my next apartment – helping make a cosy nest the likes of which I would never achieve on my own. A flair for interior design would be no bad thing.

- Structuring the architecture of my personal finances (dealing with an international tax advisor), as well as bookkeeping and company client financials.

- Holding team members to account on timelines, as well as preparing me for calls with them – producing a print-out with everything I need to start calls at 60 mph.

- Hiring a part-time housekeeper to keep a fridge fully stocked, water the plants, manage laundry, sheets, and the occasional bit of cooking (though that I don’t mind myself).

- Booking fitness activities, making sure I get to the gym and to sporting activities. (A bonus if you’ve an interest in holistic health, as you’ll be researching the occasional health/medical query.)

The role will be a varied one. I’m after something of a “bionic” assistant – someone able to co-manage a remote team, yet who’s fine doing a humble errand: having a watch strap fixed, or picking up some shirts.

*

If there are things you consider you’re lacking from the above, do not (necessarily) be intimidated. If you’re smart enough, proactive enough, and a quick enough study, that’s room to make up for it. (I’d rank tenacity over experience, and am looking for somebody long-term.)

The position will start at 25–30 hours per week, and pay will be set at a competitive rate. In quick time, for the right candidate, the role will become full-time.

The ideal candidate is not tied down and able to travel freely, and available to work a somewhat flexible schedule.

I’ve great relationships with all my former assistants – and happy to put any winning applicant in touch with them for reference.

If interested, please write back with a short letter noting why you think you’d be a fit. Do not send a CV of any kind; I’m not interested in where, or even whether, you went to school – all that matters is that you can do it.

I won’t be able to get back to everyone, but for those who stand out I will be in touch to book a phone interview. (Expect responses starting Tuesday September 3rd.)

Thank you for considering the position and reading until this point. If you’re feeling on the fence about applying: please do.

Best of luck, and I look forward to hearing from you,

Edward
