Job Description

Folding a flat sheet of paper into a functional surface or structure has been an intriguing design problem. When working with engineering materials, we consider material thickness during the folding process to achieve specific engineering needs, such as deployable space antennas, solar panels, and origami robots.

We are seeking a motivated and innovative intern to contribute to the cutting-edge research and development in generative design of origami- and kirigami-inspired deployable structures through machine learning. This role focuses on combining advanced mechanism-based design principles with generative design methodologies to create self-transforming structures that can have large shape changes due to their special geometries.

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct research on machine learning generative design and origami- and kirigami-inspired deployable structures with guidance.
  • Assist in designing, modelling, and simulating deployable structures.
  • Perform prototyping, testing, and analysis of physical models to evaluate performance.
  • Document results and findings in technical reports or research papers.

Requirements:

  • Educational Background: Currently pursuing or recently completed a degree in Mathematics, Physics, Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Robotics, or related disciplines.
  • Technical Skills:
    • Proficiency in CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks).
    • Proficiency in programming and simulation tools (e.g., MATLAB, Python).

We provide:

  • An active and vibrant research environment.
  • Work closely with a team of experts in design and manufacturing processes.
  • Opportunities to co-author research papers or patents based on project outcomes.
  • Development of skills that are highly valued in industries such as aerospace, space, and robotics.
