Company Profile

About TSL:

TheSmartLocal is a "new media" company that creates content for the social media generation. Think a Singapore Buzzfeed with less cat gifs. We strive to produce content for locals that is positive, creative and sharable.

Here are recent examples of content we are proud of:

We're also known for our structured internship program that includes lessons on ideation, SEO, writing, media etiquette etc. We work closely with schools like SP, NP, NUS and NTU to provide students with official attachments that help them become "industry ready".

We pay our interns above the market rate, ranging from $700 to $900, depending on academic qualifications and inclusive of CPF payments.

Job Description

Job Requirements:

TSL has since expanded into multiple sites covering different verticals - Lifestyle, Food, News and Female. We're now looking for intern journalists to help out in these departments. All of them fall under the TSL banner and we work in the same office. This means your journalist experience can end up being very holistic - some interns move through different departments.

Although comms students applying will have an edge, our internship program accepts students from all educational backgrounds. You'll just have to demonstrate strong writing fundamentals and show creativity in your writing. We'll teach you the rest.

Due to the steep learning curve, our internships requires a 6 month commitment.

For students without a comms background, our internship is a key to unlocking a career in the media industry. You'll be personally mentored in the art of creating concise, polished writing for the social media generation. Our interns have gone on to join established media publications after completing their internships. And the very best are offered full-time positions.

Job Scope:

  • Pitching stories weekly and not getting disheartened when they get rejected. Most interns get good at identifying stories halfway through the program.
  • Writing stories assigned to you, that you may have little interest in.
  • When you're ready: Writing stories for clients that'll let you pimp up your resume. You'll be able to say you've written for clients such as x, y and z.
  • Offline research where you and a photographer go exploring Singapore.
  • Online research and curation where your butt and chair become best friends.
  • Enviable periods of attending events, being hosted at tastings and hotels and doing secretive undercover reviews.
  • Unenviable periods of sitting at your desk and churning out articles from 9am to 6pm.

Above all, you have to have a true interest in writing or you will not be suited for this position. This position can be very challenging at times. So if you're thinking of just "having fun", please swipe left. I mean please don't apply.

This position is already closed and no longer available.  You may like to view the other latest internships here.
