Role Summary:
The Bioprocess Development apprentice will support bioprocess development activities, gaining hands-on experience in media preparation, fermenter maintenance, process monitoring, sample preparation, and analytical instrument operation. This apprenticeship provides an opportunity to learn and apply aseptic techniques and laboratory procedures in a real-world setting. The intern will work collaboratively with the team, contributing to the efficient execution of experiments and supporting bioprocess development projects.
Responsibilities:
Media and Buffer Preparation:
- Assist in the preparation and formulation of media and buffer solutions following established protocols.
- Learn and practice proper autoclaving procedures to ensure media sterility.
Fermenter Operation and Maintenance:
- Assist in cleaning-in-place (CIP) procedures for fermenters.
- Help prepare and set up fermenters for experimental runs, ensuring readiness for use.
- Assist in the calibration and maintenance of pH and dissolved oxygen (DO) probes.
- Participate in autoclaving fermenters and related equipment as required.
Fermentation Process Monitoring and Control:
- Assist in monitoring and controlling fermentation processes according to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
- Learn to collect and record data accurately and consistently.
Sample Preparation and Analysis:
- Assist in preparing fermentation samples for downstream analysis.
- Learn to operate and maintain gas chromatography (GC) and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) systems for sample analysis.
Laboratory Equipment Operation and Maintenance:
- Learn to operate and maintain various laboratory equipment, including pH meters, spectrophotometers, analytical balances, centrifuges, microscopes, biosafety cabinets (BSCs), autoclaves, and hot air ovens, according to SOPs.
Data Management and Documentation:
- Assist in maintaining accurate and detailed laboratory records of experimental data.
- Learn to document all procedures and results in accordance with good documentation practices.
Scientific Research and Literature Review:
- Assist in online searches and review scientific literature to support experimental design and process development.
Laboratory Safety and Compliance:
- Adhere to all laboratory safety protocols and procedures.
- Participate in the implementation and maintenance of laboratory safety measures.
Collaboration and Communication:
- Collaborate effectively with team members to achieve project goals.
- Communicate clearly and effectively with colleagues and supervisors.
- Be flexible to work shifts as required.
- Adapt to evolving bioprocess needs.
Qualifications:
- Currently pursuing a Master’s or Bachelor’s degree in Biotechnology, Microbiology, Chemical Engineering, or a related field; or Diploma with relevant experience.
- Basic understanding of aseptic techniques and laboratory procedures.
- Interest in fermenter operation and maintenance.
- Eagerness to learn and operate analytical instruments such as GC and HPLC.
- Good documentation and record-keeping skills.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to follow SOPs.
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work shifts when required.
- Ability to follow strict safety protocols.
