Subject: Research Mentor for 3 Month High School Project - East Asian Studies, China Studies, Humanities
TIG Launchpad is looking for PhD candidates, PhD holders, or university professors in East Asian Studies, China Studies, or Humanities to mentor a high performing high school student through a 3 month research mentorship project.
About the role:
You will guide one student through an independent research project in East Asian Studies, China Studies, or a related Humanities field. The goal is to help the student develop a research question, conduct background reading, structure a paper or presentation, and produce a final output that demonstrates university level thinking. This is a mission driven program focused on giving talented students access to real academic mentorship.
Commitments required:
Duration: 3 months
Meetings: Fortnightly or monthly 1 to 1 check ins with the student, 45 to 60 minutes each. Schedule is flexible and can be set directly with the student and family.
Between meetings: Provide feedback on drafts, reading lists, and direction via email or shared docs. Expect 1 to 2 hours per week outside of meetings.
Final deliverable: Help the student complete a 10 to 15 page research paper or equivalent project presentation.
Qualities we are looking for:
Currently enrolled PhD candidate, PhD holder, or university professor in East Asian Studies, China Studies, History, Literature, Philosophy, or related Humanities field
Strong academic background and ability to explain complex ideas clearly to a motivated high school student
Experience with research design, source analysis, and academic writing
Reliable, responsive, and committed to meeting deadlines
Enthusiasm for mentoring and for supporting the next generation of scholars
Compensation: Paid position. Rate discussed upon selection.
