YA LOR Braised Duck – Service Crew

Going for the recommended item on their menu, the Signature Braised Duck Rice comes with other elements such as Bean Sprouts, Braised Peanuts, Braised Egg (Half) and Beancurd. Diving straight into the braised duck, we liked how the meat here seems to be served boneless by default — a neat attention to detail that makes the braised duck here easy to eat, especially considering the clientele here in the heart of the Central Business District. That being said, we did find the meat to be a little tough and slightly on the drier side; we have certainly had braised duck that is more moist and tender as compared to the ones served here, though should not be too much of a concern for those who are not too particular about their food. It is noted that the braised sauce here also carries savoury-sweet note that leans closer to a sweeter finish; though being rather thick and rich, the braised sauce also lacks of a distinct hint of spices that were used — something that other establishments may seem to place a focus on to provide more contrast to the flavours of the dish. Otherwise, the other elements here are fairly decent, though the soup is similar to that of the ones served with Hainanese Chicken Rice and bears no herbal notes to it. While the rice did feel a tad dry to have, it could be easily fixed by drenching it with the braised sauce provided with the platter; not only does it provide more flavour to the rice, but it also gives the rice a bit more moistness that makes it easier to have.
