About Web Designer
Web designers create new websites and update existing ones. Working closely with graphics designer and digital content specialist to fulfill the requirements of our clients. Web designers design, layout and code websites, incorporating graphics, sound, and video. They determine not only the appearance of websites but also how users experience them. Web designers may also maintain websites and work on search engine
The day-to-day
Typically, a web designer will:
- Present initial design ideas
- Produce sample page layouts, known as ‘wireframing’
- Receive feedback from clients about draft sites and make necessary amendments
- Design the physical imagery, graphics, and animations of new websites
- Edit and proofread text content and grammar
- Ensure websites meet accessibility and privacy standards
- Upload new websites to a server
- Redesign websites and debug code
- Ensure the ‘look’ of new websites adheres to company branding and client requirements
- Choose colors and backgrounds for websites and position buttons, icons, links and photos
- Liaise with graphic designers and digital content specialist
- Install security protections on websites
- Test new websites to ensure everything is working
- Ensure websites function on a variety of devices
- Work on search engine optimization (SEO)
- Keep up to date with software and technology developments
Key skills
- Technical skills: Unsurprisingly, this is the most important requirement. As a web designer, you will need good working knowledge of coding, scripting, and programming. These usually include HTML, CSS, MySQL Database, Ajax, PHP, JQuery, Dreamweaver, Photoshop and Illustrator, and Javascript. Skills in Search Engine Optimization (SEO) may also be needed.
- Communication and listening skills: As a web designer you will not spend all your time in front of a computer screen. You will also have to interact with the team and understand what is required from the website you are tasked with building.
- Creative skills: At root, being a web designer is about designing unique websites. Keeping abreast of new trends and technical developments may help.
- Project management skills: Web designers are usually very busy and have to juggle multiple projects each with their deadline.
Qualifications
A degree is preferred. IT, computer science or engineering graduates are best placed, but any subject is acceptable. Postgraduate, diploma, relevant institutes or non-graduate training in web design may apply.
Relevant experience
